Internet of things

The City Region Deal includes plans for a regional Internet of Things network. Up to 100 gateways across the region will be added to the existing test network of 15 gateways in central Edinburgh. Real-time sensors will be connected through a low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) and capture environmental data such as bio-diversity, weather, and pollution, across 7,000 square kilometres.

Most of the network gateways will be installed at secondary schools and colleges, who will be able to use the data in biology and geography projects, boosting learning within STEM subjects. Working with partners, our IoT infrastructure will also include additional technologies such as Wi-Fi, enabling unique applications to combine communication technologies to achieve low power as well as high bandwidth operations.
